Francophone Studies Working Group

The primary aim of the Francophone Studies Working Group (FSWG) is to foster interdisciplinary conversation on topics arising from the French colonial empire and its aftermath in contemporary France and the postcolonial world. We bring together graduate students and faculty from French, Comparative Literature, and History; our meetings are also of potential interest to scholars working in other national literatures and in departments such as Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Political Science, Rhetoric, Linguistics, Film and Media, and Sociology.

Some of our meetings are devoted to discussions of recently published work in the field of Francophone Studies; others are "work-in-progress" meetings organized specifically to provide wide-ranging feedback to students at the dissertation or job market stage and to faculty and postdoctoral fellows preparing texts for publication. Some of the topics discussed in past years have included the infamous events of 17 October 1961, literacy in colonial West Africa, travel literature, the figure of the goor-jigeen in Senegal, West African oral epic narratives, and debates in France over the teaching of colonial history.

Click on the "Events" tab for information about past and upcoming meetings and about upcoming Francophone events (films, lectures, concerts) happening on campus and in the Bay Area.

Readings for some of our meetings will be available under the "Documents" tab approximately two weeks beforehand. Other readings will be emailed to participants who RSVP for the meeting.

Click on the "Blogs" tab for information on current Francophone studies related book projects and conferences. If you have your own appel à contribution to add to our site, please send it to one of the coordinators listed below.
