History of Poetic Genre

The History of Poetic Genre working group brings together graduate students at UC Berkeley working in various disciplines in a shared discussion of poetic genre. The group asks how scholars can classify the form and practice of verbal art, study their complex histories, and conduct fruitful comparisons across traditions. How do genres change through time and across space? This group seeks to provide a shared intellectual space for graduate students engaged in the study of poetry across the Area Studies departments. However, as it considers questions of form, culture, and history more broadly, it is of interest to students in the fields of history, anthropology, and rhetoric as well.
