Sonic Sites: Sound and Movement

Sonic Sites privileges the connections among sound, movement, and place, taking lived sound as its primary object of study. Sonic Sites is squarely positioned between Townsend Center Music and Sound Initiative and the Global Urban Humanities Initiative, emphasizing both the acoustic and the lived environment: the intersection between sound and space. There is a strong performative dimension to the conversations of this group, concerned with movement, the body, and its relationship to sound. Sound is often enveloped into the category of music, but what is it to study sound itself? That is the question of this group, and one that draws on initiatives both at the Townsend Center and across Berkeley’s campus.
