The Japan Studies Working Group

The Japan Studies Working Group offers UC Berkeley graduate students from a broad range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences an ongoing forum for intellectual exchange and collaboration centered on the study of Japan, past and present. With rigorous discussion, close reading of texts, student presentations, and guest presentations by outside scholars, the group identifies and explore key themes and concerns in Japan-focused scholarship. In its inaugural year, the group invites graduate students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to consider any aspect of science and technology (and their concomitant epistemologies, ontologies, practices, politics, histories, and ideologies) in relationship to Japanese society—past, present, and future.
